1957: Kyekyeku's New Film Tackles Historic Asante-Northern Ghana Feud

1957: Kyekyeku's New Film

Kyekyeku, a renowned Ghanaian actor and skit maker, has revealed his latest project: a film titled 1957, which explores the historical and contemporary dynamics between two major ethnic groups in Ghana, the Ashantis and the Northerners. The film’s title refers to the year of Ghana’s independence from British colonial rule, a momentous event that shaped the nation’s identity and destiny.

The film’s cover art eloquently displays the two groups' rich and distinctive cultural heritage, as well as the potential for harmony and integration. On one side, the characters are dressed in the colourful and intricate Kente cloth, symbolising Ashanti royalty and pride. On the other side, the characters are clad in the simple and elegant smock, a traditional garment of the Northerners. In the middle, Kyekyeku, who also serves as the film’s producer, wears a hybrid outfit that combines both fabrics, signifying his role as a bridge and a mediator.

In an exclusive interview with Kwadwo Sheldon Studios, the filmmaker Kyekyeku articulated that the film serves as a narrative canvas for Ghana’s cultural landscape, stating: “It is about Ghana because we’re talking about two tribes, the Ashantis and the Northerners.”

‘1957’ aims to challenge and address some of the stereotypes and generalizations that have often plagued the relations between the Ashantis and the Northerners, both in the past and present. Through a compelling narrative and a humourous tone, the film hopes to foster a deeper understanding and appreciation of the diversity and unity of Ghana.

Helmed by director 925, ‘1957’ features a stellar cast of acclaimed Ghanaian actors, such as Kalsoume Sinare, Papa Kumasi, Dr Likee (Aka Ebenezer), Vanessa Nicole, Bernice Asare, and Empress Gifty. The film is set to premiere on March 6, 2024, coinciding with Ghana’s Independence Day, at the Royal View Cinema SG Mall.
