Nigerian Artists Chiké and Mohbad release posthumous collaboration ‘Egwu’

Fans of Nigerian music are in for a treat as Chiké, the Afro-pop/soul sensation and acclaimed songwriter, has released his latest single, ‘Egwu.’ The track, which came out on Friday, December 15, 2023, features the voice of the late Mohbad, who passed away in September this year.

The song is a result of a collaboration between Chiké-Ezekpeazu Osebuka, better known as Chiké, and Ilerioluwa Oladimeji Aloba, also known as Mohbad. The two artists created ‘Egwu’ before Mohbad’s tragic death, demonstrating a remarkable chemistry and compatibility. The song pays tribute to Mohbad’s talent and legacy, preserving his musical spirit for generations to come.

The production of ‘Egwu’ was handled by DeeYasso, a veteran producer who has worked with Chiké before. He gave the track a distinctive sound that blends Afro-pop, and soul elements with a touch of Amapiano.

What makes ‘Egwu’ stand out is the flawless integration of Mohbad and Chiké’s vocals, showing a deep respect and appreciation for each other’s craft. They deliver their lines with skill and grace, creating a harmonious masterpiece that appeals to both fans and critics.

Chiké, who rose to fame as a runner-up on ‘Project Fame West Africa’ in 2015 and later impressed audiences on ‘The Voice Nigeria’ in 2016, has not revealed when the music video for ‘Egwu’ will be released. However, he has hinted that it will be worth the wait.

The late Mohbad, whose real name was Ilerioluwa Oladimeji, was a rising star in the Nigerian music scene with his unique street rap style and collaborations with big names like Naira Marley, Davido, and Zlatan. He broke into the mainstream in 2019 with his hit single ‘Balan Zia Gar,’ which showcased his lyrical prowess, unique flow, and ability to connect with listeners on a deeper level.

Sadly, Mohbad died at the young age of 27 on September 12, leaving behind a rich musical legacy. His songs continue to resonate with fans across Nigeria and beyond, topping charts with singles such as ‘Peace,’ ‘Feel Good,’ ‘Ask About Me,’ and ‘Beast and Peace.’ In a surprising turn of events, some of his songs have even reached the Billboard US Afrobeats song chart.
