Ghana's Armed Forces Council

Vice President Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has been appointed as the chairperson of the newly constituted Armed Forces Council. This prestigious body, established under Article 211 of our 1992 Constitution, will provide strategic leadership to ensure our Ghana Armed Forces remain effective and disciplined in the face of modern security challenges.

During the swearing-in ceremony, President Mahama emphasized the crucial role the Council plays in military governance.

"The responsibility placed on your shoulders as a Council is one of great national importance," President Mahama told the members. "The strength of our Armed Forces depends not only on the bravery of the men and women in uniform but also on the leadership policies and decisions that guide them."

Key Priorities for Ghana's Military Future

The President outlined several priorities that will shape the development of our armed forces:

  • Skills enhancement programs for military personnel
  • Investment in modern military technology
  • Infrastructure development for military facilities
  • Improved welfare systems for service members and their families

President Mahama stressed the growing importance of technology in modern warfare and urged the Council to embrace innovation and data-driven security solutions as they develop our nation's defence strategy.

Regional Security Partnerships

In his address, the President highlighted the importance of strengthening partnerships with ECOWAS, the African Union, and international allies to effectively address security threats that extend beyond our borders.

A Call for Ethics and Accountability

The President called on Council members to maintain the highest standards of ethical conduct and transparency within the Armed Forces, emphasizing that corruption and misconduct have no place in our military institutions.

As the Council begins its work under Vice President Opoku-Agyemang's leadership, President Mahama expressed confidence in their ability to serve Ghana with honour, wisdom, and unwavering commitment.

This appointment is an important step forward as we work to strengthen our military leadership and tackle the growing security challenges in Ghana and across West Africa.
