The World’s Largest iPhone: A Record-Breaking Achievement by Mrwhosetheboss and DIYPerks

The tech industry continuously advances by pushing boundaries, exemplified by two of YouTube's prominent creators collaborating to set a Guinness World Record. Arun Maini, widely known as @mrwhosetheboss and Matthew Perks (@DIYPerks) achieved this through a notable engineering and creative endeavour, constructing the world’s largest iPhone replica. Standing at an impressive 2.054 meters (6.74 feet), this fully functional scaled-up model of the iPhone 15 Pro Max exemplifies human innovation and the growing potential of technology.

This groundbreaking project, unveiled on 29 August 2024 in London, UK, marks a major milestone for both creators and tech enthusiasts. But this isn’t just a story of size — it’s a celebration of surpassing Apple’s YouTube subscriber count, a bold challenge Arun promised his audience he would commemorate with a “giant iPhone.”

Breaking Records, Breaking Boundaries

The largest smartphone replica project began as a promise by Arun Maini, who is known for his deep dives into the latest technology trends and gadgets. After surpassing Apple's subscriber count, he collaborated with Matthew Perks, a creator renowned for crafting larger-than-life versions of everyday gadgets. The result? A scaled-up iPhone 15 Pro Max that is more than 12 times the size of the original, fully functional, and capable of everything a regular iPhone does.

In just over 3 months, the duo managed to build a fully operational smartphone, which was later officially recognized by a Guinness World Record representative. The device boasts a working touchscreen keyboard, supports phone and video calls, plays music and videos, and even takes selfies. Arun demonstrated these features live after receiving the world record certification, showcasing that the iPhone is more than just a visual wonder — it’s a functional piece of tech art.

Reflecting on the achievement, Arun said, “Growing up, I would disappear into the library for hours to read the latest Guinness World Records books, so to achieve an award myself feels absolutely surreal.”

Building the Ultimate iPhone

While the size of the replica might catch your attention, the sheer complexity of its construction is just as impressive. The phone's camera setup alone would put most flagship devices to shame. The creators equipped the phone with a Canon EOS R5 camera, which records 8K resolution video, providing a much sharper and more cinematic experience than any current smartphone camera on the market.

But the upgrades didn’t stop there. A 25x optical zoom, using a unique periscope-style mirror setup, far outstrips the iPhone 15 Pro Max's native 5x zoom, allowing for crystal-clear photography even at extreme distances. This camera setup highlights the creators' desire to surpass not only the original iPhone's specs but also those of any future iPhone models.

High-Powered Hardware

This isn’t just a giant iPhone with an improved camera. The creators also packed the phone with an astonishing amount of power. Although it runs Android—due to Apple's proprietary iOS limitations—this super-sized smartphone contains a 24-core Intel i9 processor, 128GB of RAM, and an AMD 6950 XT graphics card, essentially turning the device into a high-end PC.

For context, the best iPhones come with 8GB of RAM and a mobile processor, but this replica is built with 4 terabytes of storage, split between Android and Windows, allowing the user to boot into either operating system. This makes the iPhone replica a true hybrid device, capable of high-end gaming, multitasking, and professional-level video editing.4

Screen and Audio Innovations

To make the device as immersive as possible, the team used an 88-inch OLED display from LG, which provides superior contrast, colour accuracy, and viewing angles. This wasn’t just any screen slapped onto the phone — it had to be custom modified to function as a touchscreen, which involved an intricate process of applying specialized optical glue. Despite a few setbacks (including breaking an earlier version of the screen), the final result is a crystal-clear, responsive display that rivals any premium smartphone or television.

The creators also outfitted the phone with custom-built speakers, delivering deep, powerful bass using an innovative transmission line subwoofer system. Each speaker operates at 50W, which, when combined with the eight-speaker array, produces rich, immersive sound—perfect for video playback, music, and even video calls.

The phone’s 400W flashlight is another standout feature, so powerful that it requires its own water cooling system. It can easily light up an entire room, proving to be a tool that goes well beyond your average smartphone’s capabilities.

Winning the Guinness World Record

After months of hard work, Guinness World Records officially confirmed the 2.054m (6.74 ft) iPhone as the largest smartphone replica in the world. The adjudicator was meticulous in ensuring that the replica maintained the exact proportions of a real iPhone 15 Pro Max and that all the essential features worked. From browsing Instagram to unlocking the phone to using the 400W flashlight, every aspect was thoroughly tested and passed with flying colours.

In the end, Arun Maini and Matthew Perks not only achieved their goal of building the largest iPhone, but they also created a fully functional, high-powered smartphone capable of pushing the boundaries of what mobile devices can do.

Final Thoughts

This achievement goes beyond being a viral YouTube video or publicity stunt; it highlights the growing influence of creators in the tech industry. Arun and Matthew have demonstrated that with sufficient dedication and expertise, it is possible to innovate and enhance products developed by major tech companies like Apple.
