DopeNation, a Ghanaian music duo, has kicked off 2024 with a new single titled ‘Jakpa’, which they released on Thursday, Jan 25. The song, which they also produced, is a motivational and upbeat track for the young and ambitious generation of Africa.
‘Jakpa’ is a Yoruba word that means ‘to run away’ or ‘to escape’, a language spoken in Nigeria and other parts of West Africa. The song reflects the reality and aspirations of many African youth who struggle with poverty and lack of opportunities in their home countries and wish to migrate to better places.
The artists, who are brothers, share their own stories and goals, as well as the hardships and possibilities that they face abroad. They also convey their optimism and resilience to achieve their dreams and silence their critics.
The song mixes Afrobeats, Highlife, and Amapiano, three popular and diverse genres of African music, creating a distinctive and lively sound. The lyrics are mostly in Pidgin English, a widespread language across West Africa, with some words and phrases in Hausa, a language commonly used by Muslims in the region.
