Libianca Kenzonkinboum Fonji, a 22-year-old Cameroonian-American singer-songwriter, has released the official music video for her hit single “People (Check On Me).” The video, directed by Ceo Jay of Ceo Jay Production, premiered on YouTube on January 19, 2023, and has since garnered significant attention.
Libianca, a former contestant on The Voice, began her musical journey at the age of six, later honing her songwriting skills between the ages of 10 and 11. Her early involvement in school choirs and local music opportunities laid the foundation for her career, including signing her first record deal in her mid-teens and releasing an EP by the time she was 16.
Her viral single “People (Check On Me)” has amassed over 50 million streams across various music platforms. The song holds personal significance for Libianca, as it was recorded during a period when she was struggling with her mental health. In an interview, she revealed that she has Cyclothymia, a mood disorder that brings fluctuating highs and lows.
Reflecting on the challenges that inspired the track, she shared, “I was going through a low point, dealing with depressive symptoms and harmful thoughts. I felt overwhelmed and struggled to push through.” She recounted a specific moment during a Friendsgiving gathering at her home when her emotions hit a breaking point. After briefly stepping away from the event, she realized she was relying on alcohol to cope with her feelings and eventually isolated herself to focus on music.
“I went upstairs to one of the studios and thought, 'I need to record something.’ I wasn’t in the mood to be social or post on social media, but I felt the need to express myself through music," Libianca explained. After finding an instrumental by Mage the Producer on YouTube, she started recording. "I closed my eyes, and the song just came out. It was exactly how I was feeling in that moment."
Libianca's transparency about her struggles with mental health resonates deeply with fans, contributing to the song’s emotional impact. Her hope is that her music helps others heal and embrace their true selves. “As long as I’m making music that connects with people and helps them not be ashamed of who they are, I’m doing what I’m supposed to do,” she said.
Fans can stream and download “People (Check On Me)” on all major music platforms and watch the official music video on YouTube.
