John Dramani Mahama Condemns Violence, Calls for Unity Following Election Victory

John Dramani Mahama, the President-Elect of Ghana, addressed the nation via the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) yesterday evening, expressing gratitude for the support shown during the recent election and calling for unity in the face of challenges.

In his statement, Mr. Mahama characterized the election victory as a “moment of hope, unity, and opportunity” for the nation. However, he also raised concerns over reports of attacks on state offices and installations during the transitional period. While the perpetrators remain unidentified, the President-Elect unequivocally condemned the acts and urged for an immediate cessation of such activities.

“Transitions from one administration to another create the impression of a vacuum of power,” he noted. “Certain people are easily compelled to act in their own parochial interest instead of the national interest.”

Addressing the nation’s youth directly, Mr. Mahama appealed for restraint and constructive engagement, encouraging them to channel their frustrations into rebuilding efforts rather than resorting to criminal activities.

“As I said during my post-declaration speech, I urge the youth not to vent their frustration in criminal enterprises. Instead, they must channel their anger and frustration into the positive enterprise of resetting and rebuilding our beloved nation,” he said.

Calling on all Ghanaians to remain calm, he emphasized the importance of safeguarding the nation’s democratic institutions and avoiding actions that could undermine progress.

In a direct appeal to the current administration, Mr. Mahama urged the sitting president and security agencies to act decisively to curb the ongoing unrest. “State power is still in the hands of the present administration,” he reminded, underscoring the importance of maintaining order during this critical period.

The President-Elect concluded his message with an expression of hope and unity: “We have fought hard for change, and now is the time to demonstrate our commitment to building the Ghana we want through unity and understanding. May God bless Ghana.”

Mr. Mahama’s message has been met with mixed reactions on social media, with many commending his call for peace and others urging swift action to address the reported incidents.
