DopeNation, the award-winning Ghanaian music duo, has released the official music video for their latest single ‘Jakpa’, a song that celebrates the resilience and ambition of the African youth.
The song, which was also self-produced by the talented siblings, is a fusion of Afrobeats, Highlife, and Amapiano, creating a unique and vibrant sound that appeals to a wide audience. The lyrics are mainly in Pidgin English, a lingua franca across West Africa, with some sprinkles of Hausa, a language widely spoken by Muslims in the region.
‘Jakpa’ is a Yoruba word that means ‘to run away’ or ‘to escape’, a language that originates from Nigeria and spreads to other parts of West Africa. The song captures the reality and aspirations of many young Africans who face poverty and lack of opportunities in their home countries and desire to migrate to greener pastures.
The artists, who are brothers, convey the emotions of the young Africans who encounter hardships in their homeland and seek to explore possibilities in foreign lands. They also express their hope and determination to achieve their goals and overcome their enemies.
DopeNation is one of the most successful and respected musical acts in Ghana, having won several awards and nominations, including the Best Group at the 2020 Vodafone Ghana Music Awards. They have also collaborated with some of the top names in the industry, such as Sarkodie, Sista Afia, Medikal, Kuami Eugene, and more.
