24th VGMA: Black Sherif Wins Artist of The Year Award

The 24th edition of the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMA) was held on May 06, 2023, at the Grand Arena of the Accra International Conference Centre. The event celebrated the best of Ghanaian music and culture, with performances from some of the biggest names in the industry. However, one artiste stood out from the rest and swept away four awards, including the coveted Artiste of the Year. He is none other than Black Sherif, the musician who has taken the nation by storm with his unique blend of highlife, reggae, and hip-hop.

Born on January 9, 2002, in Konongo-Zongo, in the Ashanti Region of Ghana, Black Sherif, whose real name is Mohammed Ismail Sharrif, gained popularity in 2021 with his songs "First Sermon" and "Second Sermon," which showcased his raw talent and lyrical prowess. His breakthrough came in March 2022 with his hit single "Kwaku the Traveller," which reached number one on the Ghanaian and Nigerian Apple Music charts and became his most popular song. Following this success, he released his debut album, The Villain I Never Was, on October 06, 2022, which received critical acclaim and massive support from fans.

During the event, the artist delivered a stunning performance of his songs "Oh Paradise," "Sad Boys Don't Fold," "Soja," and "Konongo-Zongo," which electrified the audience and earned him a standing ovation.

At the 24th VGMA, Black Sherif was nominated for nine (9) categories: Artiste of the Year, Most Popular Song of the Year, Album of the Year, Best Hiplife/Hip-hop Artiste, Best Music Video, Best Reggae/Dancehall Song, Best Afropop Song, Best Hip Hop Song and Songwriter of the Year. He won four (4) out of these nine (9) categories, making him the biggest winner of the night.

Black Sherif dedicated his awards to his parents, family, management team, and Konongo-Zongo, his hometown. Finally, he expressed his gratitude to the Almighty, his fans, and the general public for making this a success.

In all, Black Sherif's success at the 24th VGMA is a reflection of his talent, hard work, and determination. He has proven that he is not just a villain, but a hero who has conquered the hearts of many with his music. He has also shown that he is a force to reckon with in the Ghanaian music scene and beyond. Congratulations to Black Sherif for making history at the 24th VGMA!
