The University of Cape Coast (UCC) recently held its 57th graduation ceremony, celebrating the achievements of graduates from its four colleges: the College of Education Studies, the College of Agriculture and Natural Sciences, the College of Humanities and Legal Studies, and the College of Health and Allied Sciences. This event marked a significant milestone in UCC’s history, showcasing its academic accomplishments and dedication to excellence.
Vice-Chancellor’s Address: Celebrating Excellence
In his keynote address, the Vice-Chancellor of UCC, Prof. Johnson Nyarko Boampong, praised the graduates for their resilience and commitment. He urged them to apply the knowledge and skills they had gained to make meaningful contributions to society.

Prof. Boampong highlighted UCC's consistent recognition in global rankings, stating: “For the past four years, [UCC] has been ranked first both in Ghana and West Africa, and amongst the best in Africa by the Times Higher Education World Universities Ranking.”
He also emphasized the university’s leadership in research: “On research quality in Ghana and West Africa, UCC is unmatched in holding the number one spot. UCC is among the top 15 universities in Africa and the only university in Ghana that is ranked in the top 15 on the continent. UCC has also maintained its position as one of the leading research-intensive universities globally.”According to Prof. Boampong, these accolades underscore UCC's pivotal role in higher education and its significant scholarly impact across Ghana and the African continent.
Sustaining Momentum in Research and Innovation
The Vice-Chancellor attributed the university’s success to the dedication of its faculty, stating: “This achievement emanates from the hard work and commitment of our faculty towards engaging in impactful research. I say ‘Ayekoo’ to UCC management, staff, students, and stakeholders for their contributions toward maintaining our enviable position in the 2025 World Universities ranking.”
Looking to the future, Prof. Boampong reaffirmed his commitment to enhancing UCC's research output. He pledged to encourage faculty and staff to pursue innovative research that could be commercialized and patented for societal benefit: “UCC, under my leadership, will strive to improve or at least sustain our research output. Faculty and staff will be encouraged to conduct cutting-edge research that will lead to innovative outcomes capable of commercialization and patenting for societal benefits.”Infrastructure and Upcoming Events
Prof. Boampong also announced plans to expand student accommodation through a collaboration with the UCC branch of the Ghana Universities Staff Superannuation Scheme (GUSSS).
Additionally, he shared that UCC will host the Ghana Universities Sports Association (GUSA) Games in January 2025. Originally scheduled for November 2024, the event was postponed to allow for thorough preparation. The Vice-Chancellor commended Mrs. Laura Doku and Mr. Nathaniel Ampah for designing the official logo and mascot for the games.
Celebrating Sporting Achievements
UCC’s excellence in sports was highlighted during the ceremony, with special recognition given to the UCC Youngsters Football Club for qualifying to compete in the Access Bank Division One League for the 2024/25 season, organized by the Ghana Football Association.
Council’s Charge to Graduands
Most Reverend Titus Awotwe Pratt, a member of the UCC Governing Council, represented the Council Chairman, Rev. Prof. Harold S. Amonoo-Kuofi, at the event.

He urged the graduates to approach their endeavors with discipline and diligence to achieve success.
“Go the extra mile in everything you do to excel,” he said. “Refrain from anything that will bring the school’s name into disrepute.”
