A Hindu Monk Writes the World’s Thickest Book, a Biography of His Spiritual Leader
In a world where digital media dominates, one might wonder who still reads books. However, for some people, books are not only a source of knowledge and entertainment, but also a way of expressing devotion and reverence.This is the case for Gyanjivandasji Swami (born on July 14, 1960), a Hindu monk from Gujarat, India, who has authored the world’s thickest book, according to Guinness World Records. The book, titled “Shree Haricharitramrut Sagar”, is a comprehensive biography of Bhagwan Shree Swaminarayan (born on April 3, 1781), an 18th-century religious leader and reformer who founded the Swaminarayan sect of Hinduism.
The book measures 496 mm (19.5 in) in thickness and has dimensions of 144 mm x 496 mm x 219 mm. It contains 10,080 pages with 29 cantos, 2,409 chapters, and 102,564 couplets that include text and pictures of Lord Swaminarayan’s divine pastimes. It weighs 9.5 kg.
The book covers various aspects of Shree Swaminarayan’s life, teachings, and legacy, drawing from historical sources and scriptures. Gyanjivandasji Swami wanted to spread the message of peace, harmony, and service that Shree Swaminarayan advocated.

Guinness World Records officially recognized the book as the world’s thickest book on Feb. 2, 2020.
The book was published in a limited edition of 500 copies, which were distributed to various temples and libraries across India and abroad.
