VGMA 2023: Celebrating The Best Of Ghanaian Music

The 24th edition of the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMA) will take place on Saturday, May 6, 2023, at the Grand Arena of the Accra International Conference Centre. This annual event, organized by Charterhouse, will honour the achievements of musicians who have made significant contributions to the music industry during the year under review.

The VGMA is widely regarded as Ghana’s most prestigious music awards ceremony, celebrating excellence across various genres, including highlife, afrobeat, hip-hop, hiplife, gospel, and reggae/dancehall. Since its inception in 2000, the event has recognized both Ghanaian and African artists, with millions of viewers tuning in each year to watch the live broadcast on television and online platforms.

VGMA Selection Process
Nominees for the VGMA are selected by a panel of industry experts and stakeholders. Artists and record labels submit their works, which are then reviewed and evaluated based on criteria such as popularity, production quality, and overall impact during the year under review. In addition to the panel’s input, the public also plays a role in the selection process through online and SMS voting.

Artiste of the Year Nominees
The Artiste of the Year category is the most prestigious award at the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMA), recognizing artists who have demonstrated outstanding performance, audience appeal, and significant influence within the music industry during the review period. Among the nominees this year is Black Sherif, who gained widespread recognition with songs like "First Sermon," "Second Sermon," and "Kwaku the Traveller," blending hip-hop, highlife, and afrobeat.

Meanwhile, Stonebwoy, known for his consistency in the reggae/dancehall genre, released notable tracks such as "Therapy," "Gidigba," and "Greedy Men," while also collaborating with international stars like Sean Paul and Angelique Kidjo. Additionally, Sarkodie, a long-established figure in the Ghanaian music scene, continues to dominate with hits like "Country Side," "Labadi," and "Better Days" from his latest album Jamz.

Furthermore, King Promise, who has become a major player in the Afro-pop genre, delivered chart-toppers like "Ten Toes," "Ginger," and "Yaa Asantewaa," alongside collaborations with artists like Chance the Rapper and Omah Lay. Camidoh also made waves this year, impressing many with his smooth vocals and versatile hits such as "Sugarcane Remix," "For My Lover," and "Slow." On the other hand, KiDi continues his rise in popularity with infectious tracks like "Touch It," "Blessed," and "Champagne," showcasing his engaging performances and signature music style.

In the gospel category, Piesie Esther stands out as a leading figure, inspiring audiences with songs like "Waye Me Yie" and "Me Nte Ase." Similarly, Joe Mettle, a consistent presence in gospel music, made his mark this year with releases like "Kadosh," "Bo Noo Ni," and "Yesu Mo," while collaborating with top gospel artists in Ghana. Together, these nominees represent the best of Ghanaian music, each bringing their own unique contribution to the industry.

Voting and Outcome
The final winner of the Artiste of the Year award will be determined by a combination of votes from the VGMA Academy, the Board, and the public. Fans are encouraged to vote for their preferred artist online or via SMS before the voting period ends on Friday, May 5, 2023, at 11:59 PM.
